Who it's for

Who needs CIDB registration?

The Construction Industry Development Board (CIDB) regulates and grades contractors within South Africa's construction sector. If you want to tender for government or larger construction projects, CIDB registration is often required.

CIDB registration is essential for:

  • Builders - residential and commercial
  • Civil contractors - roads, infrastructure, sites
  • Electricians - taking on tendered work
  • Plumbers - government and large project tenders
  • General construction companies
Levels

CIDB grades explained.

Your CIDB grade determines the maximum value of projects you can tender for. Grading runs from G1 (entry-level) up to G9 (major contracts).

G1

Entry-level

Starter contractors - small projects, ideal for businesses entering the formal market.

G2–G6

Growing contractors

Mid-tier project values. Most growing SME contractors operate here as they scale.

G7–G9

Major works

Tender for the largest government and infrastructure projects in South Africa.

Why register

Benefits of CIDB registration.

Tender access

Bid for government and large construction projects.

Industry credibility

Recognised grading lifts your standing with clients and suppliers.

Pathway to growth

Move from G1 to higher grades over time as track record builds.

Funding readiness

CIDB grading often required for project finance and asset funding.

Avoid the delays

Common mistakes.

Many applications are delayed by months - almost always for the same reasons. We've seen all of them:

Incorrect or incomplete forms

Section R3.4 missed, signatures on the wrong page, outdated form versions. We use current templates and double-check every field.

Outstanding tax matters

SARS non-compliance kills CIDB applications. We resolve this before submission - and can sort SARS compliance as a bundled service.

Missing supporting documents

Bank letters out of date, CIPC docs expired, director IDs not certified within 3 months. We pre-check everything.

Questions

Frequently asked.

How long does CIDB registration take?
Timelines vary by grade and document readiness. Most G1–G3 applications complete in 2–4 weeks once documents are in. Higher grades (G4+) can take 4–6 weeks due to additional financial requirements.
What grade should I apply for?
Most contractors start at G1 - it's the right entry point and unlocks meaningful tender opportunities. You can apply for upgrades as your track record grows.
Do I need a registered company before applying?
Yes. CIDB registration requires a CIPC-registered entity, valid tax clearance, and a business bank account. We can bundle these as a complete package if you're starting from scratch.
Can you help if my SARS status is non-compliant?
Yes - we offer a SARS Compliance Recovery service that pairs naturally with CIDB applications. See our SARS Compliance page for details.
What about renewals?
CIDB grading must be renewed every 3 years. Clients on our monthly retainer get automatic renewal management - we'll lodge it before expiry.
